Decoda’s Music from Sing Sing at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Room
On May 20, 2025, Decoda presented Music from Sing Sing at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Room. This profound concert shed light on the extraordinary creative voice of composer Paul V. Cortez, currently incarcerated at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. His deeply personal chamber works were brought to life by Decoda’s accomplished musicians.
The intimate setting of the Weill Music Room allowed both the emotional depth of Cortez’s music and the sincerity behind each performance to resonate fully. These compositions, inspired by Cortez’s experiences in incarceration, his connection to the natural world, and his unwavering faith, took on added poignancy in this elegant yet humble hall.
Photographing the concert was a remarkable experience. The close quarters meant every expression, gesture, and moment of musical tension was clearly visible, creating pictures that feel both human and powerful. Decoda’s modern interpretation of Cortez’s works, filled with emotional nuance and rich musicality, made for unforgettable imagery against the warm lighting and historic charm of Carnegie Hall.
Music from Sing Sing also highlighted Decoda’s ongoing commitment to presenting meaningful community-centered music. Sponsored in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the City Council, this event was a testament to the power of music to bridge worlds and elevate unheard voices .
